Former GDR border tower

Experience contemporary history on the Green Belt

Take a special trip to Bad Lauterberg and visit the former GDR border tower in Bartolfelde. Located between Bartolfelde and Bockelnhagen, it stands directly on the famous Green Belt. The tower has been preserved in its original state and is a rare piece of German history.

At the tower, oversized chairs and tables invite you to take a leisurely break. Enjoy the vastness of the landscape and the tranquil atmosphere of a place that was once closely guarded.

The Green Belt was the inner-German border until 1989. Today it is a unique nature reserve. A well-developed network of hiking trails runs along the former border line. Ideal for anyone who wants to combine hiking along the Green Belt with culture and nature.

Start your hike directly at the GDR border tower Bartolfelde. Discover rare plants and animals, tranquil forests and vast meadows.

With a bit of luck, you will meet Fredy Willig, the owner of the tower. Perhaps he will tell you one of his stories from the time of German division – personally and authentically.
