Schlossberg-Schutzhütte Burgruine Scharzfels
Castle atmosphere with home-style cooking
Scharzfels Castle was built in the 10th century on a dolomite rock that rises 150 meters above the Oder Valley. Some of the rooms and corridors are carved directly into the rock or were created from natural cavities. With this special location on the rock, the castle was long considered impregnable, which is why numerous counts and dukes inhabited the walls over the course of history.
In 1761, the assumption was disproved: French troops laid siege to the castle, which was subsequently set on fire. Today, the last remains of the once proud fortifications between Barbis and Scharzfeld can be seen in the form of the well house.
A model of the complex is on display in the local history museum in Bad Lauterberg and shows the structure of the complex with the outer, lower and upper castle including the garden, outbuildings and adjoining cemetery. One exciting detail is certainly the drawbridge, which provided the only access to the interior of the castle.
Today, the site of the former lower castle is home to a popular restaurant. Here you can fortify yourself with home-style German dishes in a cozy, rustic atmosphere. The restaurant is easily accessible by car and parking spaces are available. We recommend the ascent on foot, then the food tastes twice as delicious. The wonderful view of the mountain panorama around Bad Lauterberg is also a feast for the eyes.
The Scharzfels castle ruins are also a worthwhile destination for anyone looking for a thrill. After a 30-minute walk from the Zoll hiking parking lot in the Barbis district, you will reach the climbing garden at the Scharzfels castle ruins. Various tours with bolt hooks and redirectors promise variety. Climbing is at your own risk and with your own equipment.
