Harz hiking pin

Get to know the most beautiful places in the Harz!

The Harz hiking pin is the most popular hiking badge in our region. You will find the green boxes of the Harz Hiking Badge with the stamps in them at historically significant sites, places of geological or mining interest or where magnificent views await you.

You need 222 different stamp impressions to achieve the highest award as Harz Hiking Emperor or Harz Hiking Empress. You can achieve this in stages and for an unlimited period of time. With eight stamps, for example, you can earn the Harz Hiking Badge in bronze.

How fitting that there are exactly eight stamping points for the Harz Hiking Needle in our immediate vicinity. So you can easily get your first hiking pin during your vacation in Bad Lauterberg.

We have also developed something unique for our guests that combines hiking fun in Bad Lauterberg with health awareness and a thirst for knowledge: Master our exciting hiking challenges.

Hike 8 stamps around Bad Lauterberg

STAMPING STATION 43

Wiesenbeker Teich von oben

Weser-Elbe watershed “High Door”

Discover the “Hohe Tür” vantage point between Bad Lauterberg and Steina, a district of Bad Sachsa, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view over the “Wiesenbeker Teich” pond.

Dombrowsky’s Baude by the lake welcomes you with regional cuisine. A good place to start your hike is the parking lot at Wiesenbeker Teich.

STAMPING STATION 101

Außenansicht von der Einhornhöhle

Unicorn cave

The Unicorn Cave is one of the largest karst caves in the Harz Mountains. The cave was given its illustrious name in the 17th century by Otto von Guericke, who attributed the bones he found to a unicorn.

Unfortunately, the myth was debunked in the 18th century when the fossils were identified as bear bones. A visit to the cave is still worthwhile, preferably as part of a guided tour.

STAMPING STATION 115

Geschafft: zwei Mädchen stempeln an den Stempelstelle Bismarckturm.

Bismarck Tower

This stamp takes you up the Kummel. The Bismarck Tower is 536 m above sea level and can be climbed up 71 steps. From the viewing platform, you have a wonderful view of the Harz mountain panorama with the Brocken and Wurmberg.

Hungry hikers will also find an excursion restaurant next to the stamp box at this popular vantage point.

STAMPING STATION 150

Blick auf das Harzer Bergpanorama vom Großen Knollen.

Large tuber

Would you have guessed it: the “Große Knollen” is a former volcano. At 687 m high, it is one of the highest elevations in the southern Harz region.

This was obviously not enough for the members of the Bad Lauterberg branch of the Harzklub. They erected a stone observation tower in 1904, which was raised to 20 m in 1961. That’s a good thing, because on a clear day you can see the Weserbergland and the Thuringian Forest in the distance.

STAMPING STATION 151

Die Burgruine Scharzfels bei Bad Lauterberg.

Scharzfels ruins

The remains of Scharzfels Castle from the 12th century await you near the village of Barbis on a dolomite rock.

Before the castle was set on fire and blown up in 1761 following a siege by French troops, it was home to various counts and dukes. Today, you can dine at the ruins overlooking the Oder Valley in the adjoining inn and enjoy the panoramic view.

STAMPING STATION 152

Balancieren auf Baumstamm im Wald

Tuber cross

The Knollenkreuz is located at an altitude of 480 m and is a crossroads between Bad Lauterberg and the Großer Knollen. Here you can discover one of the charcoal burners’ huts, the “Hentschelköte”, typical of the Harz region.

Secure the stamp on a hike from the Kleine Scheffeltal to the Großer Knollen, where you should also take the HWN 150 stamp with you. But only figuratively speaking – stamps are not souvenirs.

STAMPING STATION 153

Wandergruppe mit Frau, die in die Kamera winkt

Goedeckenplatz

Halfway between St. Andreasberg and the Großer Knollen is the Goedeckenplatz, a crossroads where the ascent to the Großer Knollen begins. Be sure to enjoy the magnificent view of St. Andreasberg and the wide Siebertal valley before the ascent.

The Goedeckenplatz is 2.5 km from the Sieberberg parking lot and the start of a 20 km round trip to the Großer Knollen, via the Knollenkreuz and back.

STAMPING STATION 158

Blick über die Odertalsperre bei Bad Lauterberg

Hassenstein

To the east of Bad Lauterberg, above the Oder dam, there is a wonderful viewpoint at the “Hassensteinhütte”, a refuge for hikers. On days with good weather, you can see as far as the 1142-metre-high Brocken from the Hassenstein.

We recommend the “Meilerplatz” parking lot below the Panoramic Hotel on the outskirts of Bad Lauterberg as the starting point for your hike up the Hassenstein.

All stamp booklets, accompanying booklets, pins, books and hiking maps for the Harzer Wandernadel are available from us at the Tourist Information. Of course, we are also available to provide you with individual hiking tips.
