Unicorn cave
Explore a fascinating underworld in the Harz Mountains
Visit the largest accessible cave in the western Harz. The Unicorn Cave stretches over an impressive total length of almost 700 meters. Around 300 meters of it are accessible for guided tours. Discover mighty halls and domes that are connected by narrow corridors.
Thanks to new research results from 2014 to 2017, it is now clear that the actual extent of the cave goes far beyond the area known today. The underground space is significantly larger than previously assumed.
In the south-western section – the Blue Grotto – two natural ceiling breakthroughs open up. They are considered to be the last remaining original entrances to the cave. Since 1905, however, visitors have been able to enter the cave via an artificially created tunnel at the White Hall – today the main entrance.
The cave attracted treasure hunters and bone collectors as early as the 16th century. It was believed that the bones of unicorns could be found here – valued as a remedy. It was later recognized that the finds came from extinct large mammals such as the cave bear. However, the unicorn – as a myth and namesake – has survived to this day.
A visit to the cave is only possible in conjunction with a guided tour. Guided tours are:
every hour from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Duration approx. 45 minutes
